Help ! Buying a 1985 140 v4 Evinrude

I'm buying a boat and motor off a friend. 16.7 Scorpion by Chris Craft with the 140hp motor.

The Boat has been sitting about 4 years in storage. Other than pulling the cover off I haven't had a chance to really look at the boat. The lower unit was drained and filled prior to storage and covered with a plastic bag to seal out any elements. (boat is kept on a marine railway under a car port.

Any suggestions on what I should check before finalizing the sale?

I've heard there can be problems with electric shift. Does this motor have this feature?

Hi Tommy,
Before final sale you should (if you can)test drive the boat. This will require some work but it will give you a better idea as to what you are buying. After you test the boat do a compression test on the motor. Do not be too concerned as to what the numbers are but be more concerned with how much of a difference there is between the compression numbers.More than 15 pounds is not good. Generally the psi in the cylinders should be 120 to 100psi. Greater the numbers, is a good thing.

Tommy,

The compression test is a must. However, do it before you run it.

DO NOT run that engine with any fuel that has been left in the boat.

Monitor the head temperatures very carefully. You should be able to hold your fingers on them for of seconds without getting burned (145 degrees).

The engine will DEFINETELY need a water pump service.

Thanks for your help.

I did the spark plug and Oil thing. I pumped out the old gas then poured in some fresh and I test drove it too. and should have thought of a compression test before all of that but I got stupid.

I have the boat in my driveway now. spent some time looking around, cleaning things up.

The previous owner took out the oil injection (well plugged it) said it wasn't worth the risk of a 3$ part messing up.

The idle is a little off. I have a partial (photocopied sections) manual for the motor, so I'm going to try to figure out how to set it, but I was reading some other posts about a Carb rebuild. is it difficult?
