I was taking the bell housing off of my volvo AQ140 and when i did, i noticed the shaft inside the housing was a little loose and rough sounding when i spinned it. it also has a little amount of rust inside of it too. Im pretty sure its not supposed to be loose but this is my first inboard engine i've worked on and i'd like to be positive. attached are some pictures of the shaft inside the bell housing that im speaking of. should i just pack it with grease(and, if so, what kind?) or should i change the bearings completely?

You have it pulled down this far, go a little further. Change the bearing and seals.

There should be NO!!!! rust or noise. If you don't replace it now you will be pulling your motor again. When you replace the bearings then pack it and install agrease fitting if there isin't one already,Jerry

When you replace the bearing see if you can find a sealed one, then you will not need to grease it. But it must be replaced or you will not only be replacing it later but the bell housing as well.

Have a great day,

Rob.
