 Im a marine staioned in california and i just came back from iraq. i went to crank up my boat and the oil cooler broke on my volvo penta aq130d. i went to get a price on the replacement part and it cost more than my boat. so i have an AQ140, it is fresh water cooled, not the exact same as the 130. if you have any advice on doing this engine swap please let me have your opnion.

Glad to hear you are safe at home. I do not know that particular engine, but I do have one of the other Volvos an AQ 131. If it was my engine I would look at ways to by-pass that oil cooler, IMO it is not required. These engines are old technology, probably at least 15 years old. IMO todays oils especially synthetic can handle the higher temperatures and a cooler is not required. That is what I would do if it was my engine. My AQ 131 does not have an oil cooler. Get rid of the cooler and run synthetic, you should be fine.

Another option is to try and get your cooler repaired. But I would first try and bypass it.

Just my opinion, I am sure others will chime in.

Have a great day,

Rob.

First, thanks for your service.. Glad you are back safely...

Not sure how relevant this is but I know the AQ130 series is a pushrod engine. The 4cyl OHC's (AQ125's for instance) didn't come with an oil cooler initially. i THINK they added them in later years.

Now, if you are just looking for an excuse to upgrade you should just be able to swap it as far as mating to the drive. The 140 is just another Volvo 4. I'm not sure if the exact location of the engine mounts will be the same but I THINK they'd be fine
