Just bought a 85hp suzuki and the guy I got it from says it needed to be rebuilt cause the berrings were bad. Had to find out for myself started right up and runs just fine in the yard. But when I took it out to test it and shift into gear runs ok at slow speed but when i give it more throttle it doesn't go and eventually cuts off. If I tilt the motor where the intake is just in the water it will run pretty well seems that when it is under load it won't put out enough power. What could be causing this? Don't know much about motors and just want to get a few opinions before I take it into the shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

A compression test should be done first to help rule out any internal engine damage (pistons, rings, cylinder walls)..

If all checks out with the compression test, I'd start by checking all the linkage to make sure the throttles are fully opening and that the timing is advancing.. Also check the fuel line for kinks or any obstructions... Add a fresh set of spark plugs and if that does'nt do the trick, and if the engine has not been used regulary, rebuilding the carbs is probably necessary..

I second the basics that snapperbait mentioned, also you might check to see if it is stopping due to overheating. Is the water pump "pee" stream pumping strong? Does the cylinder block on top of the engine feel too hot? Also, Suzukis have an electronic limiter that slows the engine to about half throttle if the oil injection filter is clogged or you are low on oil. Find out what info made the previous owner think the bearings had gone bad and was he referring to the engine or lower unit?
