I see the new post about a Force doing essentially the same as mine, but in case it's not....

I have a 1988 40 johnson, rebuilt trim/tilt 2 wire. the trim just stopped working while I was running.

The DC motor sounds like it is working when I hit up or down, I metered the leads, everything is getting 12v.

when I put my hand on the motor and the up or down is hit I can hear the motor hum, and feel a click. I pulled the two bolts on top figuring I'd have to replace the motor and they are very corroded. And I can't budge the motor and stopped right there, better ask before I go further!

I cracked open the screw on the base on the starboard side of the unit hoping it had just frozen and it immediately ran good fluid, no froth, NO discoloration, no water.

I tightened and tried again but no go, since this happened at the upper end of a river where I couldn't get back out without it trimmed I had to lift the motor by hand, but I couldn't get it up enough to engage the trailering catch.

so I had to unbolt both pistons and then lift the motor and 'trailer position' until I got clear of the skinny water.

Now, given that all 2 wire replacement motors are way over $100 that I see online, and I don't know what OMC # I'm replacing to boot, I'm hoping to fix this thing myself with your help.

I could send it out to be rebuilt but! TIME IS CRITICAL. I will buy a new one if I can't get it fixed by 14 SEP 2003. no choice, I live boat access only and this is the same as a car to me, I can go a week but that's it.

there are no motor shops around me that I found willing to rebuild brushes or even look at it.

Any and all help asap would be most welcomed!

IF nobody is around to rebuild it...Or you do not want to attempt it yourself...you are left with 1 alternative. Buy a new one. :(

TMD

eaw....

Look at the bottom of the motor. You will see a manual relief screw. Turn this screw counter clockwise two turns or so. This will let you lift and lower the motor by hand until you get repairs. If you can't get the screws out, you may need to get another unit.

I can get the screws out but the motor is ON THERE!
