Hello,

First Post so go easy one me please. To make sense of what I'm about to say let me start from the beginning. A month ago our friends who own Silverthorne resort @ Shasta Lake were selling their chase boat. It’s a 1981 Bay liner 18'8" w/ Volvo 4 cyl. overhead cam in superb condition more or less for $1,000+newer trailer. (trailer is worth 1,300 that it came on) however the reason they were selling it is a valve had burnt up (popping in intake manifold and low compression in #4 cylinder) so I'm going to need a valve job. Anyone know how much this is going to cost?

But for my main question is I went to replace the bellows and lines because they were all rotted out. I got a selco manual but they aren’t very specific on any the removal of the stern drive which I need to remove to replace the U-joint bellow. I got the two Allen screws in the steering helmet off but I cant remove that blasted spacer. Help!! I also need help on how to remove the 2 screws/bolts that the outdrive pivots on. Do they Screw, push, or pull out? (Yes I removed the Allen screws holding them in place.)

If you cant tell its my first boat and I need help!!

The two pins that hold the drive on push/pull out. What ever is better for you (I tap on the pin from the inside with a long screw driver and hammer and then when enough to grab a hold of I pull it out with vice grips). I am not sure what “blasted spacer” you are talking about. Mine only has one allen bolt that hold the helmet to the drive with no spacer. Have you unhooked cable to the gear linkage yet? That has to be done before you can pull the drive. First you have to unhook it from under the cover and also unbolt the cable keeper from the front of the drive (side facing the transom. Should be two 7/16th bolts that hold the keeper (1”X2” flat chrome piece) up near the drive shaft bellow.

I got the blasted outdrive out!!! Wahoo!!! I took the helmet off where it hooks into what I will call the helmet fork. Then I tapped out the hing pins and it went pretty easy. I knew the outdrive would be heavy but its a good thing I sill have a back.

and yes i took the shifter cable out. (first thing I did actually I.E. didnt want to bend it.)
