I am experiencing heavy steering with my merc 175 EFI.
I am running a Hi five prop with rack and pinion steering.
It pulls badly to port at higher RPM.
I have adjusted the trim tab both ways but it has little or no effect.
Someone suggested fitting hydraulic steering.
Any thoughts.

Re: Heavy Steering Merc 175

Is that a single or dual cable. If it is a single I would make the upgrade, at 175 hp that is a lot of hp. I have heard some real mixed reviews regarding a Hydraulic set up for high speed performance. I have heard that they are pretty swimmy, and there is no center return. With a slower boat I think they would be great. Torque is gonna happen over 60 mph, but you need to have control of your hull to be safe. Lube the cables often, that can make a big difference. I have a no-feedback single cable for my 150 Merc and have been pleased with it. But if I had more power I definatley would go with the dual set up.

If you have a single cable-175 is too much.

Dual cables are recommended for engines over 150 and boats capable of 50 mph.

I would go with a dual cable-no feedback system.

Hydraulic VERY spendy and is a little loose feeling at high speeds.

Check out West Marine at: www.westmarine.com.

You can get an idea of the different types available.
