I have a 1994 Mercury Tracker 40hp, which has a heat sensor which I believe is bad. My mechanic said this was the only year such sensor was on this motor. The engine is 4 cylinders. He said if it were him he would just remove it, as replacement is expensive. The sensor makes the trouble horn go off for no reason, as the water coming from the p-hole is not hot. My question is how to remove it. It comes out of the top cylinder and plugs into another wire. Can I just unplug it? Thanks

I would not bypass the sensor, I would check for particulate matter somewhere in a cooling passage. I had a similar 50 hp Merc that would alarm for no apparent reason, found pieces of the impeller in a cooling passage. My tell tale was cool because the blockage was downstream. This can be a very tricky problem to chase down.
