Has anyone had any luck with plugging tubes in a heat exchanger? They are approximately 5/16". If so does anyone know wher they can be purchased ?

Thanks

Re: Heat Exchanger Plugs

Yes, But not a threaded plug. I am a plumber so I cleaned up the bad tube with a fitting brush, fluxed it and soldered it closed with 50/50 and light heat. Had to do on both ends. Have not had any problems with it.

If you can't solder, maybe you know a plumber or take it to a radiator shop, I'm sure they can do it.

I don't think the tube's wall is thick enough to tap it, but I could be wrong.

The best plugs can be done with a tapered brass plug and pressing it in place on both sides of a leaking tube. I would not recommend a tap, it would ruin the tube sheet and you would be in more trouble. The press fit won't leak, we check them at 100 psi with no leaks. A local refrigeration or plumbing supply house should stock the brass plugs if you give them the dimensions you need.
