Here's one of those problems that you feel certain the internet will solve for you in a trice- but, as it turns out, no amount of investigation has brought up a satisfactory answer:

I have a relatively small boat (27 ft), but communicating with deck crew (my wife) by shouting from the flybridge to the bow is well-nigh impossible against the beat of the diesel and the howl of the wind. The obvious solution is headset walkie-talkies, to be worn by skipper and crew when carrying out difficult and noise-ridden operations. They should have:

- enough range to operate over 8m (in other words, nothing more than kid's toys in this respect)

- have "cover" type ear pieces, rather than stick-it-in-your-ear-canal type ear pieces. Crew don't like to share their ear infections.

- have a boom or throat mike

- mike to be ideally voice-activated, but this is not absolutely essential.

- not to cost an arm and a leg, given the very modest specifications for this piece of equipment (I mean: 8m range, for goodness sake).

- ideally, all electonics and battery power to be built into the headset - given the modest specs, not an unreasonable requirement.

Can anyone suggest a supplier for something like this? I suspect even a kids' toy might be suitable, but I'm darned if I can find anything local or on the internet that serves the purpose.

Many outdoor stores have radios that will accomodate your needs(Short range, rechargeable, etc.) And a person can buy radio headsets for a cheap price, radio shack has these. Also, man cobra handheld radios have settings that you can turn to voice activated. But if you are trying to yell over loud noises, voice activated ones will probably constantly be going off, and when two radios go off at the same will not report to each other. So a muffset with the button on the line would probably be the best idea. Hope this helps.

GASP!! Well, Einstein said that everything is relative. In my world 27' is a relatively large vessel.:p

Take a look at FRS radio's. Motorolla, cobra and others make them very cheap. I have a set of Motorolla talkabouts and have voice activated mic and ear buds for them that I use when hunting. They sell a variety of different headsets for you to choose from. The wife and I use them even when we have to take two vehicles and want comms with out pulling out the cell phones.

I have seen what you are looking for a few times at campgrounds being worn by the wife to assist her husband in backing a motor home into a tight spot. The last time was a RV that looked like the tour bus for the Rolling Stones. It had everything on it known to man including automatic leveling jacks, 2 remote controlled satellite antennas, and was powered by a 500 HP Volvo diesel. Try looking in RV catalogs and you may find what you need though I remember the owner was a retired Army two star so he may have go it "surplus".

Headsets sux. Why not connect your VHF intercom to a loudspeaker on the main deck?

I like this idea. You are the captain; you speak, they do!

Another vote for FRS radios. You can even get ones that are waterproof. Take a look here. Note: GMRS radios require a license from the FCC. Stick to FRS (the two types do use overlapping channels).

Thanks, guys.

Bubba1235: your headset would certainly do the job, if plugged into a cheap walkie talkie, as you say. The problem is that this is a lot of gear and hassle for communication over no more than about 20-25 feet, at most.

What I was hoping to find was a simple headset with a walkie-talkie built in. Young Explorers has something that looks ideal - sold for kids and claimed to have a range of up to 2 miles. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Australia.
