Head rated hp vs. prop rated hp (Johnson)

What,s the scoop on when Johnson started prop rating their motors?. A friend said everything before 1982 is head rated. Another person said they are all still head rated. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure of the exact year, Reznik, but 1982 is very close. What had been a 100hp V4 OMC suddenly became an 88hp V4. All OMCs have been prop rated since then, and a few were before then. I think that the loopers were prop rated sometime in the 70s.<br /><br />The above is just opinion, not documented fact.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . . . <br />JB
