Re: Head Gaskets

If you have a Mercruiser, (or even if you don't) go up to the Adults only sticky and download Mercruiser service manual #2.
Has all the info you will need.

Re: Head Gaskets

Either they are or they're not. Pull the heads; it will be apparent as the gaskets are marked top/forward, and the large coolant passages should be at the REAR on both banks. 'nutcase

Re: Head Gaskets

I'm confused , I tore down one motor that never ran hot but had other problems. This one runs very hot so I checked everything on the outside of the motor and worked my way in.This motor has both large cooling pass. in rear of motor like you've described. My other motor had (if youlook at it from front) right side in rear and the leftside in the front. If both are to be to the rear y did old motor never run hot?? and new motor does? Trying to down load manual but not having any luck. Thanx again , keep the ideas coming ,please.

Re: Head Gaskets

No no its a merc. and yes its getting water. Replaced water pump in drive. Took drive off and fed inlet hose water from garden hose with adequate pressure and had same results. Circ. pump looks brand new inside. Took cooling hoses off one at a time to ensure water flow and all were flowing. Pulled thermostat to see if it would run cooler and did not. At idle temp. will climb to 185* within just a few min. Running it , temp will climb to 195*. Manifolds are screamin hot by then. I did find that the intake has the heating ports for the carb.(choke). Prev. owner tried to block it off using the carb to intake gasket. Don't believe this would effect the overheat problem but,I could be wrong as is usually the case.
Once again it is a 76' mercruiser 233hp ,351windsor thanx

Post some pictures showing how your hoses are installed on your engine.
