head gasket placement 1977 140hp

I am replacing the head gasket on the port side. I need to know what side the tab goes on the block. There are water passages on the gasket bottom.
I know the tab goes on top but left or right? My old one got thrown away.

The tab should face the rear or exhaust side of the cylinders. 98% sure, should be pretty evident where the water passage is on the head, is it not?

No, the only difference is when placed to the right or exhaust side the passages are over the water deflecters. The starboard side has the gasket tab opposite the exhaust. Looking back @ some pictures I posted earlier it seems the tab does go toward the exhaust.

There will be an arrow on the tab. The arrow points toward the exhaust.

Yea, that's what I looked for, the old Mallory brand gasket had a direction indicator, but this Mallory gasket didn't. Oh well I installed it with the tab toward the exhaust like the old gasket.

I'm pretty sure the tab goes to the outside of the block. Look at a parts diagram to make sure you installed it as the picture shows.
