head gasket or exhaust sounds

I have a 1979 vip with a late model 2006 140 hp mercruiser 181 4cyl motor. I hit the throttle pretty hard when all of a sudden I developed a noise
that sounded like an exhaust leak, sort of a choo choo train like sound without the oo. (ch ch ch ) I pulled the exhaust today and noticed the head gasket looks in one spot to be protruding slightly out from under the head with a tear in it. something like a cork gasket might do if tightened down to much. engine runs, no water in oil, not overheating. my question is, will a head gasket make this sound and can I check this without putting the exhaust back on?

Pull the coil wire out and crank it over watching this gasket anomoly you've found if it's the problem you should see/hear it. I'm at the marina at Canyon Lake stop and see me sometime.

Re: head gasket or exhaust sounds

That confirmed it, the head gasket blew out from the compression and pushed the gasket out from between the head causing a split all the way to the cylinder.

Thanks for the info. at least now I know what has to be done
