I am reinstalling the head on an '85 15 hp Johnson and needed to know the best way to clean the surfaces for the new gasket. I heard oven cleaner works...though it removes paint, too. Any other recommendations?

Also, what is the proper torque, and would it be prudent to use thread locker?

Thanks, Ken

Should I apply any gasket adhesive (non-silicon type)?

Bolt Torque: 18 to 20 foot pounds (Inch pounds: 216 to 240) in the following sequence.

9...10

5....6

1....2

4....3

8....7

Use no sealers! If gasket is shinny, it is self sealing. If a plain gasket, simply coat it with oil..... nothing else.

Thanks, Joe

Oh, and I only have 6 bolts.
Will 5....6 1....2 4....3 work?

Yes, I have a habit of listing the regular 10 bolt setup. Your 85 15hp of course as you state has only six.

5....6

1....2

4....3

Torque is the same.
