I just bought a 22' Glacier Bay with twin Honda 90s. The guy before me didn't use it that much so it is in great condition. I have yet to put a tank of gas in it. What is the deal the ethanol gas here in Hawaii? What, if anything, can i do to prevent any problems? The engines have been running fine as far as i can tell.

Re: Hawaii ethanol gas

ethanol attracts and absorbs moisture from the air...also can loosen corrosion, dissolve varnish...in other words-can cause contamination of your fuel so keep a close eye on all fuel filters8)

Re: Hawaii ethanol gas

Hey Jim,

The deal in Hawaii is that we have ethanol (E10) in our gas and so are susceptible to all its attendant problems, too many to list here. The Hawaii Fishing News has run articles on ethanol, its problems, and some solutions in its September and October editions. You can probably still get the September issue at newstands, and the October issue just came in the mail. Get copies then read up on ethanol.

You might want to avoid Tesoro gas stations because their gas has been granted exemption from meeting some standards, hence may cause even more problems. You can search for "tesoro ethanol exemption" on either the Advertiser or Star-Bulletin websites to read more about that.

Check your fuel/water filters more often or install one if you don't already have one. Go fill your tank and get out there. The ahi season is about over but the marlin and mahimahi are coming around.8)

Tight lines.
