Having Trouble with 2 Solex Carbs

I am having trouble with the two Solex carbs on my Volvo AQ151B. They are both dumping too much gasoline into the intake manifold causing a major back fire. We're talking major flames coming out. I've tried adjusting the air/fuel screw, changing the idle speed, adjusting the jets. Nothing seems to be working. And if I put it in gear, either forward or reverse, the engine dies. We changed from points over to electronic and re-timed the engine. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Where did you find the ignition kit for this unit ,and how much did it change your timing? Was this a problem before the retro?Valve timing and adjustment all up to snuff?Did that need to be changed with the new ignition?

You have more than one problem here. Excessive fuel will not usually cause a backfire on its own. It will casue the engine to run poorly & possibly stall. You most surely have an ignition timing issue,or an intake valve issue(possibly both). Fix this problem first, then move on to your carb issue.

Re: Having Trouble with 2 Solex Carbs

it was actually the fact that Volvo put two timing marks on the crankshafts harmonic balancer. I reset the timing to where it was suppose to be using the second mark. I got the electronic ignition module from Pertronix. it cost roughly $70. after resetting the timing and adjusting the accelerator pumps, the carbs were finally able to be synchronized. The ignition module only took 30 minutes to install, therefore all you have to do is toss the points and condensor in the lake. just changing over to electronic ignition increased the horsepower and gave the engine better fuel economy. And for it setting on a 42ft Houseboat on a single engine that says alot. So timing was the only thing wrong, and that is what was causing the backfire. now it fires on every stroke instead of every two or three like what it was doing with the points system. If anyone wants to change over to electronic ignition, do a search for pertronix at www.google.com

thanks to everyone that helped me figure out this problem.
