Hello,

I have a 2004 v4 2 stroke 90hp saltwater edition and I have removed the 4 lower end bolts but the lower end will not pull off. Am I missing something? The shaft will not release. Help please.

Re: Having a hard time removing the lower unit 04 90hp Johnson

I have just pulled my lower unit myself on my 2004 90 Johnson to replace my water pump impeller

First -you have to disconnect the shifter rod.
Its located under the carbs-on the left front side of the motor-(port side)
1) You must take the engine covers apart and remove them-the halves simply pull apart when you remove all the cover bolts.
This is the hard part-the shifter rod is attached to a pivot with a bolt in it.
You have to remove the bolt completely in order to pull the pivot off the shaft its attached to. If you don't remove the bolt, the pivot will not come off .The shifter rod is held in place by a pin on the pivot.

2) Remove the four bolts on the lower unit
3) Remove the steering stablizer -small fin mounted on round plate just above the prop. When the plate is removed, there are three more bolts inside -a short one and a long one-you don't have to remove the anode bolt-just the other two.
4) When all bolts are removed ,the lower unit will come right out.
Good luck

I think that the J90PLSRR model has the pin under the carburetors that you pull out, then you slide the pin out of the top of the shift rod.

Anyway, it will be easier to see when you remove the split lower engine cover.
