when your thumbs are all torned up from sticking them into too many bass mouth? Man, I whacked the daylight out of them yesterday, it was phenomenal. Skipped work and went to the lake, caught the first two on a devil horse, put it down and pick up a flipping stick and it was on from then. I probably had 4 limits plus all the short ones. I love fishing in May. :):)

Can't say I've had it that good yet, but hit the smallies preety well on Tuesday. My son had a great largemouth day, yesterday. Best thing is, it is now legal to catch and release bass in NY on artificials, until the traditional opening in June. I don't need that walleye excuse anymore!

I have been grinding them up pretty good. Had a phenomenal top water smallmouth bite this morning. Then it was all LM later on. Between me and my son we lost count. Lots of good size fish.

Bass-a-holic,, I am just the opposite of you. I leave spawning bass alone. Nothing will mess up the numbers of young of year bass than fishing beds. I believe that all states should have strict regulations regarding tageting bedded bass.

Peace

Yeah that is a topic that really gets alot of hype, and sometimes I'm not sure either. But I did see a segment during a Bassmasters Elite Series tournement on TV, and there was a marine biologist talking about it. He said that if you land the fish and release it right away, normally they will go back to their bed and other preditors won't have gotten the eggs, so I figure if he says its ok, then I'm not going to do too much damage.

You have to consider the source, "Bass Masters". That right there says it all. They can dig up any yahoo to say whatever they want him to say on the TV. Bass masters show case's fisherman targeting beds. All the while the pro trys to say how difficult it is to get these fish to bite. HOGWASH!!. Agreed it is controversial topic. During the spawn I see the blue gills and sunnies hanging around beds constantly, just waiting for there chance to suck up some eggs and fry. Bass master wont show how many gills and such the Pro picks up around the beds before he plucks out that LM bass.

Well, I think we have a go around on this topic before. I do agreed that if you take a bass from a bed and then release later at the ramp, that fish won't ever make it back to the bed. I have caught fish from a bed, released it right near the bed. The next day I came back and he was right where he was. Bed fishing is a lot harder then it seem, not all bedding fish are catchable. I believes the number of beds that you don't see is far more then the ones that you do see. Especially, anywhere you have clear water, they'll bed in 10ft of water or more and you DON'T sight fishing those. You'll definetely catch them by casting toward the bank and hops a bait back to the boat. After that, as far as you're concern, you weren't bed fishing because you didn't see the bed. Just out of curiousity, how do you proposes that the game warden enforces the no bed fishing rule?

Not sure how it could be enforced. There is a big difference in happening to stumble onto some active beds while fishing, then going out to target known bedding areas. We did go around about this once before and I ain't gonna beat this horse any longer. There are two kinds of bass fisherman. Those that'll purposely fish beds and those that do their best to stay off them. I pride myself in the later. I may not catch many bass but I manage a few dinks here and there.

Went to our favorite bass pond on Friday evening. We caught over 20 LM in a hour (3 people, 9 for me :) ). About half were 17" or better. Nice fatties. All on soft plastics. They were moving up to clear the nests off. Sunday evening, some were starting to spawn, so left them alone. We will check back in a couple of weeks.

Re: Have you ever had one of them day......

It seems so weird having people talk about the "coming spawn" as ours came and went the beginning of last April. Course, do to other "stuff" around the house, (this has been going on for the last 3 years, it is killing me. I average 1 trip to the lake a month) I missed the spawn all together. I love getting them right before they go on to the beds. I don't sight fish for them on the beds though. The times that I did get out, Skippy (aforementioned in a separate post last month) has been sharing the boat with me. Luckily, on my last trip out last month, I got a bite! Missed it, but maybe Skippy got bored of the once a month trip and is packing his bags. I hope so. Haven't caught a thing since OCTOBER, for Petes sake. Of course I have been out bass fishing 4 times, and trout fishing twice. (I never have been able to catch trout from a stream. I may have caught 3 in my life from a stream, and the rest from lakes.) Skippy stays by the riverbank.
