Have to engage into forward and back to neutral before starting.

I have a 1989 Regal Sebring 195 with 4.3 Mercruiser LX.

I'm pretty sure it is an adjustment, but looking for advice to save time. Before I can restart the boat, I have to engage forward and come back into neutral every time before starting. I believe I need to adjust the shift cable or interruptor switch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is it not starting OR not cranking ?

Or maybe the neutral safety switch in the hand control.

It won't crank or anything, it has power but it won't engage anything at all until I go into Forward and then back into neutral.

If it won't even try to crank then it sure sounds like your neutral safety switch in the remote control (throttle/gearshift) either slightly out of adjustment or starting to go.

is it an easy/generic adjustment that would be in the manual or does it vary upon the throttle gearshift type? i have a quicksilver if that helps any!

appreciate all the replies, didn't even think about it being in throttle handle.

thanks,

There is not any adjustments on the neutral safety switch on the QS controls. You probably have a defective shift cable from the control to the engine.
Once the inside wears out, there is too much slop in the cable that causes the problem.
