My uncle is giving me his boat that has been sitting for 10 plus years. I'd like some input on what to do for testing the motor. It is a 63 or 65 Evinrude big twin 40. He said he winterized it before it sat but it has been out in the elements of buffalo, ny weather for 10+ years. I've never worked on a boat motor but I work on atvs and snowmobiles as a hobby so I'm not unfamiliar with turning wrenches.
Pretty much would like any info to get started. If I can use this motor it would be great. Thanks for any help

Hey, it's just an engine. Needs compression, spark at the right time, and fuel in the right amount like any other. I'd approach them in that order. When you are satisfied you have a runner, replace the water pump impeller so you don't burn it up. And needless to say, check the lower unit oil.

Buffalo, huh? I hear that's pretty rough.

So long as it has good compression you can invest around $100 in ignition parts, carb and fuel pump kits, and impeller and lower unit seals. A few hours of work and it will run like new, and they are built like a tank.

If it is a 1963 it will still use the hot water choke (assuming it is electric start). For '64 they switched to the superior hot air choke, plus they re-rated the motors to officially run 50:1, though that may have been a ploy to coincide with the release of the OMC line of 2-stroke oil (made by Castrol I think)
