Have scraped the rudder and slightly bent it.

How bad is that?
I assume it can have an effect on gas mileage and ultimately steering.
But it's only slightly bent.
If it actually breaks off sometime, is that something that a mechanic can weld back on?
Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I'm going to assume you mean the "Skeg"...or the lower vertical "fin" on a sterndrive unit.

If it were a true rudder then...
How bad is that?
is REALLY bad...
but just the skeg is not a real big deal unless it's REALLY bent.

If it breaks, it can be welded, or a new one can also be put on.

Plenty people operate without one. Usually pretty easy to find a welder (instead of a mechanic) to fix it, or weld back a new one if it breaks off. Some folks say they don't even notice a difference in steering. Only way for you to find out is put it in the water and have a go at it. Proof's in the pudding, as they say.

Of course, that's assuming Oshkosh is on it and you're talking about the "Skeg". If it's truly a rudder problem, then "Houston...we have a problem"
