I have inherited a Mercury Mark 78A with a "F" in a box next to it, ser# 1261646. I need to know the year and any info available on this motor. Is it a electric shift? The control box has a single lever with a push button on top. Looking for a manual also, TIA. RogerL. roger812@hotmail.com

It's affectionately refered to as a "dockbuster" and get's it's name by the reason it has no actual neutral gear. They start and run in either direction. But only one direction at a time and getting it to start just at the right moment as you came to the dock was sometimes a comedy of errors.

Anyway the "a" suffix dictates it as an Anneversary year which I belive was 1958 or 9.

You're more than welcome to bring your questions over to John's old mercury messageboard

Here is an obvious "fan's" website http://www.dockbuster.net/
