My 1988 65hp commercial runs like a top and it came with a broken skeg. I have found a 115hp evinrude of the same year and was wanting to put the nice leg from it on mine. I was going to put the coils, starter, solenoid and a few other trinkets on the shelf. I was also wondering if the power trim from the 115 would work or if I could put the power head from the 65 onto the 115. The 115 issue is a piston through the cylinder wall but that would imply everything else was working for the cylinder to be punched?

How bad is the skeg? If that's the only thing wrong with your gearcase you have several options depending on the extent of damage.

If it's not too bad you could simply grind off some material (I've done it with a Makita grinder with a sanding disc) to reshape it and make it look aesthetically pleasing, you won't even notice a difference in performance or handling.

I've heard that it's not too difficult nor expensive for a welding shop to repair skegs, but don't have direct experience with that.

You could install a Skeg Guard ( skeggard dot com - this forum blocks posted links for some reason).

It runs great and your right it just looks funny. I wanted some spare coils and other parts off of the motor and I am getting the blown one for 100$ and some cannonballs. was hoping to make it look nicer is all. I can scrap the rest of the motor and get most of my money back. Just wanted a backup leg was all or a new skeg.

thanks for the gearing info. I probably would have tried for a few hours to put it on. Could I swap all of my leg components into the other leg and the just use the new housing.

If the part numbers are the same....which I'd doubt.
You can check at shop2.evinrude.com
