The WORLD is not worried about enriched uranium for peaceful purposes. (other than those opposed to nuclear power generation) It's the weapons grade material combined with a 1500 mile range delivery system that has their neighbors just a little nervous.

At the United Nations a day earlier, China expressed strong concern over Iran's announcement that it had successfully enriched uranium and called on Tehran to suspend enrichment. However, both China and Russia have repeated their opposition to any punitive measures against Iran.
In my opinion these are two of the countries that contributed to there nuclear program and they are feigning concern? I don’t think so.

There are two reasons why Iran wants nuclear power:

1) A psycopath wants to flex his muscles and massage his own ego

2) A psychopath wants to build a nuclear bomb

I dont like either option.

Ken

Iran is a signature to an international UN treaty agreeing that nobody that doesn't already have nuclear fission technology will develop it. I think it is called the "Nuclear non-proliferation Treaty".

It does not forbid nuclear fission power plants, but they must be purchased from a "nuclear" country. It forbids refinement of weapons grade uranium or production of plutonium by non-nuclear countries.

It covers a lot more, but those are the issues here. There are several countries that have nuclear power plants built and fueled by France, Russia or the US (I think).

Sort of like, "If you don't already have a gun you can't make one but you can buy one ready made from those "licensed" by the treaty."

The present situation concerning Iran and uranium enrichment is a very complex one.
1. Iran has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes only, as entitled to them by treaty.
2. Due to the fine line between uranium enrichment for the production of energy and that which is required for nuclear weaponery, it is more a question of trust.
The Iranian Govt' have not to date presented the UN with the kind of assurances that is required as per the treaty to which they are a signatory.

The USA is not a signatory to the non proliferation treaty, neither is Russia, China, France and the UK.
These are only countries which are allowed to process weapons grade uranium or highly enriched uranium also called plutonium.
the only exceptions are India, Israel and Pakistan, they are not members to the IAEA treaty.
However the latter three countries are not ethically permitted to trade in such material lest they wish to compromise their respective national security.

Another reason that others have reason to say that Iran cannot obtain nuclear weapons is that they have said that Isrel should be wiped off of the face of the earth. They don't have the military power to do that. What better way to achive their goal than a nuclear weapon.

Threatening other nations with genocide is most surely a good enough reason for the world-body to deny any offending country of ever possessing, deploying or using Nuclear weapons.

I think for Mr. Kopec's sake we need to establish some ground rules, but my ground rules are about rules, so this is kinda scetchy . . .

Do you, sir, believe there should be any rules for anybody anywhere?

I ask because your question seems to imply that no one has the right to limit anyone from anything . . .

QC, I think that my opinion on whether there should be rules or not is irrelevant......
There are rules (& consequences) regardless of what I think, that's a fact.....
You belong to society whether you like it or not, that is the first rule......
I'm not looking to beat the Iraqi debacle dead horse here, WMD or lack thereof.....
Iraq says that they not only have enriched uranium, but they will continue to do so & make even more.....
Why does it make it OK for other powers, Israel, Pakistan, India, China, North Korea, but not Iran, because the U.S. says so?
More importantly, what is anyone going to do about it?
Russia & China say, nada....
I think that we are in a sticky spot here, far closer to WW III than ever before.....
How will we (the enlightened, whoever that consists of), get/make them desist?
The U.N. is basically a toothless dog, or isn't it?......JK

Re: Haut's Troll of the Week.......

Why is it OK to proclaim that you shouldn't sexually abuse children? Because I think it is repulsive, evil and wrong? Because society says so? Seriously, what gives me the right to proclaim that you shouldn't?

This is all about line drawing, some are above the line some are below. I am prepared to use our global influence and power to assert that Iran cannot be trusted with a sling shot, let alone nuclear weapons. If their pursuit of nuclear energy brings them even an inch closer to developing nuclear weapons, then I am comfortable saying that we have not only the right, but the moral obligation to stop them.

Not everything is fair and equal, just because we are in Iraq, does not mean that we have to topple every evil dictator. Proclaiming that Iran cannot be trusted to innocently develop nuclear power does not require that we reevaluate every other threat or historical decision with the exact same logic.

Edit: Yes, the UN is a toothless dog.

Each time we slap at the UN, we are also slapping ourselves.
The teeth of the UN is with the leading five permanent members, they are the only ones with the power of veto.
The UN is a collective entity of which the USA is a major part, the rules by which the UN operates were crafted with significant imput of the USA, perhaps many of those rules are redundant in this new era, if so, we must engage in the necessary diplomacy needed to implement the required changes we seek, until then it is prudent that we work with what we have.

China & Russia say that they will not do anything.....
I think that it pretty much pretty much puts the kibbosh on any real U.N. action.....
Russia is building a plant in southern Iran, I would think that it would be in there interest to be the one providing the fuel.....
Cash has to be at the bottom of this somehow....
Why isn't China & Russia sweating this. They are right next door, do they not fear nuclear attack?.....JK

Why does it matter whether or not China or Russia feel threatened?
