Re: Has anyone use the big orange filter ??? (Holding tank smells)

Looking for a good black water holding tank filter. Any use the big orange? I've another type, but it's $100 a year to refill. The orange one looks easier and cheeper to refill.

It's $145.00. I use Sealand filters and they cost $75.00 and i get two years before i switch them out. Here is how to recharge the Sealand filters

First, purchase your pvc (male and female) (dwv) fittings for 2" pipe, primer & glue, and the carbon pellets (the pellets can be found at PetSmart for under $5 -900ml):

Then, cut the vent filter in half using a hack saw:
Empty the old pellets, and remove the sponge retainer pads by pushing them out from the ends. You can wash the pads and let them dry for reuse:
Remove 1" of the label (with a razor knife) where you will be gluing the new fittings on. Then install the fittings with the primer and glue. Let this cure before adding the new pellets:
Place the pads back into the ends and fill the two halves completely with new carbon pellets, and screw the two halves together using teflon tape:

Options:
You could use a no-hub fitting instead of the glue-on fittings that I used (that's the rubber tube with clamps).
You could replace the 30 ppi foam retaining pads with new foam: PetSmart has 30 ppi filter pads of the same thickness that you could cut them out of. However, I found the existing foam to be fine.
The next time all you will have to do is unscrew the two pieces and refill.

Thalasso is right you can either modify and recharge the Sealand filters or make your own for a lot less money.

My boat doesn't have a filter at all and after a couple of times getting that nasty little "wiff", I decided that one of my winter projects is to make a couple of filters.

Here are the instructions that I plan on using to make my own.

And here are instructions for modifying the Sealand filters.

I tried to refill my existing Sealand filter. Just hasn't worked the same since I refilled it.

An inline vent filter is a must, IMHO. In order to get matter IN, you're going to need to displace air. There's just no way around it. Of course, you should still consider tank maintenance a high priority. This includes using copious amounts of holding tank sanitizer, and getting the tank pumped out regularly. If you read the sanitizer directions, they usually say not to leave anything in your holding tank for more than 5 days. If you're a weekend warrior, this means getting a pump out every sunday at the end of the day. I pump mine, then fill it with a few gallons of fresh water, then pump it again. Then about 2 gallons of freshwater along with the sanitizer.

I have ZERO head odor smells.
