Re: Has anyone ever sucked up a rope?

when i 1st got in jetskiin, my buddy sucked one up with his tigershark. was a long time ago. we just used a sharp long knife, a screwdriver and hacksaw blade. we eventurally got the rope free, but it took a lot of trying before the rope gave up(like hours and much effort)....one thing about gettin a line out of the impeller is that ya will hopefully only do it once. as it is quite memorable & just aint no fun to go get it off.

welcome to the rope club, remove the intake grate and either pull the spark plugs and turn the engine backward by hand at the pto to unwind the rope while someone pulls on it or use a shapr knife and cut it out. be carefull because that rope stuff can cause you to strip your splines in the pto and if you are not a member of the pto club you don't want to be!

I have! Have a scar on my shin to prove it. Anyway it was a kawi 650 ripped the handle pole at the base as i went over them. I just removed the grate and cut it off. That was tha easy part the rest took three stiches and fiberglass work.

If you happened to go over a ski rope, you may want to take it to your local shop to get checked out. Ski ropes are made of a poly material and sometimes when it gets sucked into an impeller housing, the rope can melt from friction and can cause damage to the impeller housing and wear ring.

Yeah, Sadly more than once :( Guess thats what happens when you rely on your buddys word that the ropes clear! lol

I carry a knife with me know, so I can cut it off out there on the water.

I learned that being in the middle of the lake with no one around you is a terrible feeling.

Oh yes, but I just flipped mine over in the water and started cuttin, have 99 tigershark, then flipped it back over ran it slow and easy to make sure there was no shaft damage, all has been well since

Yup. '96 Yamaha Waverunner. Flipped it over, remove the intake grate and was able to back out the rope. I had cut the engine when I realized what was about to happen, it was not too wrapped up. However, after the fact I realized I should have removed the spark plugs first. Getting the rope out was easier than flipping the three-seater over on purpose...

It's on my list if things never to repeat.

Probably easier to just pull the pump. $ bolts and a couple of smaller 8 10 mm for the steering and trim. gives you a little more room to work also. You should be able to reseal the pump with silicone. Also a good time to check the clearance on the impeller to wear ring and change the oil in the pump housing
