Our Mercury 90 HP outboard caught on fire this morning! Thank god our fire extinguisher was in proper order. Our mechanic thinks we could possibly fix it. Has anyone ever fixed an engine after it was on fire?

I've fixed one with very minor fire damaged, just replaced some wiring

It depends on how hot it got. If its so hot to almost melt engine parts, maybe not try, but if it just melted wire and plastic, should not be an issue.

Maybe a new wiring harness, relays, coil or electrical stuff

I'd be worried about what caused the fire. I had an Olds 442 V8 catch fire via carburetor flooding. Used fire ext. and had it running within week.

Those dry chemical fire extinguishers corrode metal very well. Make sure you get that stuff out of the motor, or off the motor, soonest. That stuff corroded the brass throttle plate rod in the aluminum carb, quite easily. I had to buy a new rod and drive out the old one with a punch.

I would hate to see what it does to piston rings and cylinders.

If it was running and got doused with dry chemical....it will need a rebuild
