How far should the harmonic balancer be sitting on the crankshaft? Im afraid to strip the thread but also concerned about harmonic balancer not sitting too tight. There is about a 1/4" gap between the balancer and timing gear cover. I'll post pics tomorrow. Thx

you are using a balancer installation tool, correct?

depending on the year, you are either missing the reluctor ring between the timing gear and the balancer or you are not drawn in all the way.

yes Im using the balancer installation tool. and I used a large wrench to tighten up the nut on the tool while fixing the other part with a smaller wrench. I did not want to overtighten the nut (maybe I just did not go far enough though) since I was afraid to break the thread on the crank.
Here are the pictures of the balancer

Also what do you mean by reluctor ring between the balancer and the timing gear? Where is it on the diagram?

The balancer bottoms out against the timing gear. If looks like you are close to that point, but if you keep turning and it keeps pulling the balancer on farther you aren't quite there yet. You have plenty of clearance between the balancer and the cover if that is what you are worried about.

I took of the balancer yesterday, cleaned it up a little more, oiled it again and one more time installed. Same result. I stopped when the tension on the nut on the installation tool was tight. Looks like it is the right way. Also I realized that there should be a little bit of a flange left on the balancer over the timing indicator for the timing adjustment. So I'm good. The reason why I'm asking so many questions and being so cautious is that this engine I'm assembling by myself and really don't want to screw up anything. Prior two engines we put together with my friend, so a lot of little details skipped my attention, also the engines were both v8, 305s, so they were a little different from this one.
