I'm going to dub this the year of the laptop 'cause they seem to be taking all of my time as of late.

Mrs. Boomyal's new Dell 600m is working great. Glad to be rid of that old toshiba. It served well but in the end it was all I could do to get my USB flash memory drive to work on it to get the data off of it.

The new problem is on Missy Boomyals IBM Thinkpad. This may be a total coincidence but I just added TrendMicro Online Virus protection. Seemingly, since then, the computer is extremely slow to boot, operate and shutdown. The harddrive stays 'busy' for the longest time. Even the frequent Trendmicro updates take forever to run. On my PC they are over in a flash.

The hard drive will finally settle down but everything remains slow. While in the busy mode, I brought up Task Manager to see if it would show anything running but nothing was displayed.

Is there any where to look, that will show me what is making the harddrive run. And if so would I understand what it was telling me?

Remove TrendMicro. If the problem goes away you found the cause. If not it should be safe to reinstall and look for other causes. My next guess would be spyware or a virus.

If Win XP, you can use perfmon to find out what's using the disk although it's not very intuitive for the first-time user.

Boom, do you still have the old anti-virus running? When you brought up the task manager, did you go to the process tab and see what was actually running?

Without any explanation, that is exactly what the problem was. I uninstalled TrendMicro, verified that the problem was absent, then reloaded TrendMicro and everything works fine now.

Thanks all.
