Hard to start after warming up

Guys,
Last year my boat would, once in a while, become hard to start after running for 30-40 minutes. It acts likes it is "flooding out". I have a habit of shutting the motor down as soon as i stop but I'm not sure this contributes to this or not. Any ideas on what to check. One other observation I have is that there is always a black smudge ring around the water line when I put my boat up. It's been this way since I bought it so I'm not sure this is normal or not.

Why don't you put what engine and drive, year, FULL model numbers into your signature, so people have some clue what you have.

Please go to the top of the forum " Adults only " And click on it, then pull the how to run a carbed motor.

You are supposed to always leave the motor run for a few minutes when you pull the throttle into neutral after running the boat. Then let it run for a few minutes after you start it.

I didn't see a "How to run a carbed motor" only a "How to start a boat with a cold carbed engine" which doesn't apply.

Yea never included how to run a carbed motor.

So after you run a boat hard with a carbed motor let it run for 3-4 minutes and then shut it off.

When you start it let it run for a few minutes, then take off easy.

Now, understand most young people never ran a car with a carbed mtor, all fuel injected, hope this helps you.

Good luck !

Re: Hard to start after warming up

Boat: 2000 206 Larson
Outdrive : SX-M 1.60 4202001216
Motor: 5.0 GL PEFS 4012014293

Perfect, now there is no question what we are dealing with.

Of course now, I am expected to come up with some good info right ;)

Re: Hard to start after warming up

Thanks guys. I'm not young at least I do not think I am. I'm 48 next week. I've driven plenty of carbed motors and never had to leave my car running for a few minutes after I stopped it but it makes since to burn off the gas once I run it hard. I'll try this and see if it improves. Thanks again for all the help.

Have you checked the choke adjustment and wiring. A lot of the marine chokes are adjusted way tight as far as I can tell. They tend to flood easily when the engine is warm. If the choke is working, maybe it's because the engine needs a tuneup. New plugs, cap an rotor. Kind of a yearly maintenance item, but overlooked by many till the engine won't start.

Re: Hard to start after warming up

So you never let a carbed motor when cold warm up. And when you ran the car hard and pulled up somewhere you didn't let it idle a minute, you should have.

Did your cars diesel / run on. In a boat if the motor diesels , will pull water back into the motor cause it's running backwards.

If that happens quick turn to key to run, or you can hydro-lock the cylinders with water.

Another reason you don't want the motor off right after you pull the throttle back is the wave that hits you in the back the motor running won't allow water into the drive and up your risers. Thats what the flappers are for.

A lot of reasons to leave the motor idle for a few minutes after you run it hard.

I always take off easy and increase throttle slow and when i get to where i want to i pull back slow on the throttle, it's how i run some don't, each to there own device.

Try leaving the motor idle, of course the motor needs a tune up and such thats a given, all that good with your boat ?

Good luck !

How can you say that so matter of factly chief. You have no idea if it was tuned up or not. Stop acting like you know all and see all. You don't !!!!!!

Re: Hard to start after warming up

I put new plugs in her last year and she starts within a crank and always has so my gut tells me it's carb related and probably a choke issue. One thing I notice is it has never started at a "higher" RPM and then settle back after warm up like my vehicles do. But I'm not sure it's supposed to. It runs so well otherwise I may just leave it be until it gets to be a more serious issue. I really appreciate all the help you guys provide.

Thanks

Mine would do similiar and i opened the choke plate a little so it is not closed all the way and air can get in and after that just a flick of key and it would take off. on cold start would let run 2-3 minutes then good to go.

Re: Hard to start after warming up

I had the same issue with a 3.0L, and I also posted a forum on here. Someone suggested to leave throttle halfway opened when trying to start, and it has worked everytime, very quickly. Of course you do not pump the throttle, just put it halfway and start. It works like a charm.

No "fast idle" like there is on a car, it is handled manually with the throttle lever.
