Motor set for about ten years, did points, condensers and plugs. Hard to start warm or cold Really dont think its smoking enough at low idle, Adjustment is froze up. There is also a side disc syle knob on the side by the back of the throttle bar says idle, that got turned a bit. .Im really not a carb guy but, would like to learn. Runs like a champ other wise.

Should there be any smoke at all at full throttle, with a 50:1 ratio? How much smoke should there be at low idle? How hard should a 9.5 J from 71 be to start?

The motor should start within three pulls. Turn the tiller arm counter-clockwise to the neutral stop and pull the choke out after squeezing the primer.

You can't burn all of the oil in a 50:1 mix unless you are running under load, so it should smoke some when testing in a barrel, or when trolling a lot, especially at start-up.

Good compression, good quality oil, and a working thermostat will lessen the amount of smoke.

Re: Hard to start 9.5

Thank you I didnt think so. Ive done high and low idle screws on Nitro motors and some go kart engines. Thats it. I'll try to free up the low idle mixture cable to faten it up a bit. I couldnt find a fuel pump kit for this engine on here? Got to sqeeze the ball here or there. After sleeping on it, Im thinkng maybe a little lean at low idle and wore out or stiff diaphragms in the fuel pump. How likely?
