Hi,

I recently purchased a boat with a very lightly used Tohatsu 50 2 stroke. I noticed that it takes a lot of turning over with the starter to get the motor running when cold. It hasn't yet failed on me but my concern is that the battery is getting excessively used on these cold starts given that there is no pull cord starter on the motor. It usually takes me about 1 minute of almost constant cranking to get the motor started and I always have to open the throttle lever to get it going. Once the engine is warm its starts fine on 1 or two short cranks. If I'm on the water and shut the engine off and it cools down again I then have to go through the same cold starting process to get it started. Oh and I am choking the motor when I start it cold and the primer bulb does go stiff when I pump it up. Like I've said the motor runs and starts just fine when its warmed up. I also looked at the plugs and timing and everything is in order. I also reset the carburetor needles and looked at the top carb with top cover off and it looks very clean.

Also why is there not a choke on the top carburetor? Sorry for the long winded description, just want to be thorough. Thanks.

Boatster
