Hi folks -- I have a little 7.5 horse merc of late Seventies vintage. I noticed the gear housing won't hold its oil any longer. It appears to be coming out around the prop shaft. No damage has been done, just age, I suspect. Our family has owned it since new and the motor must have a bazillion hours on it.

What do you suppose is the actual faulty part and how hard is it to change? Do I need special tools, etc or can I just go at it once I have the appropriate shop manual (and can I get this from Brunswick, or...?).

All suggestions welcome.

You will need a spanner to remove the carrier nut, other than that hand tools will be all you need. Get a OEM manual for the job and you might consider removing the lower unit and changing the seal on the driveshaft as well.
