I took boat out of storage and did the usual maint. on it. But found out it won't steer. Unhooked the cable at the motor and it works fine. It is locked up in the swivel bracket itself. Motor tilts okay, just won't turn. HELP anyone! Leaving on a fishin' trip in 10 days. Thanks

Re: hard steering

Thats why greasing the swivel bracket should be part of winterization

Re: hard steering

I greased the swivel last fall as I have done every year since new in 1996. Worked fine when it went into storage last October. Is there a shaft in there that binds up? Is it expensive?

Re: hard steering

Unfortunatly, the zerk fittings on most outboards do not lube the tilt tube, except for the bushings in the transom brackets. These bushing are on the outside diameter of the tube.Your problem is inside the tube.I don't have an answer as to why, unless it's to sell steering cables.

DHP

Re: hard steering

Hey guys, I really appreciated your responses. I ermoved the steering cable again that attaches to the motor and then removed the vertical bolt that holds the steering arm. Sprayed some penetrating oil inside the bushing on the steering arm side and pulled my guts out. Broke free and now is working. Thanks again for all your input.
