Took our SeaRay 180 out for the first time this year, and found that the steering was extremely difficult. At first (once in the water with the engine running) it was impossible to turn the steering wheel. The power steering pump was full, and I was able to eventually work the steering wheel back and forth and we were able to get out in the lake. However, the steering is still somewhat difficult. Should I start by replacing the power steering pump or does this sound like a cable problem possibly originating from the steering wheel area? AND - will using the boat in this state cause damage?

The most common problem is the cable from the helm freezing up in the power steering cylinder. The Stainless steel cable corrodes in the aluminum tube of the PS cylinder.

Don, Is lube applied to (or inside) the tube, and if so, what type of lube?

Bill, First clean up the steering rod, until it moves easily and smoothly in the tube. Then lube it. Merc recommends Special Lube 101, which is a lubricant with toothpaste-like consistancy.
