Hard starting

got a 1985 Thompson boat, with a 4 cyl engine, engine will crank over alot to start, makes no difference whether it is a hot or cold start. Checked for fuel leaks, found none, checked points, seem okay. After engine is running, it runs great, just have a problem with starting. Anyone have any ideas of what to do next.

Merc 12/140/470?Check the choke.Is it closed when you try to start it cold? Is it a mech choke or electric?
When was the last tune up?Jerry

yes its electric, tune up done last summer, and choke is closed when initial start up, engine is a 470
