Re: hard starting

Have you checked the function of the choker ?, are the nozzles gummed up. Does the magnet and the valves function ? Check by pulling one of the hozes from the engine and activate choker. Fuel should come out.

Re: hard starting

Your engine has choke plates that slide down in front of the thoats of the carbs make sure they are closing all the way if not the solenoid may be weak or. Another thing do not open thottle up until tries to start because those older engines get harder to start when they get basically wore out you might try richening up the air/mixture up those screws usally set at about 1 to 1 and half turns out GOOD LUCK :)

74merc,<br /><br />I have a 1972 115 Merc that does the same thing. I have found that the idle adjustment screws must be turned out 1-3/4 turns or it will not start (cold) at all. It actually starts best at 2 full turns. <br /><br />Same as yours...after it starts the first time, it is fine for the rest of the day.<br /><br />Avoid starting fluid.<br /><br />Best regards,<br /><br />Gold Bear ;)
