Is the accelerator pump squirting fuel into the carb when you pump the throttle?
Are you sure it's gas and not a water with a touch of gas smell that's going into the carb.
I've been caught on that one too many times.
Seen it pump and called it good. Only to find it was pure water, no gas.

hard starting VP125A

weekend before last I had it out on the lake for the 1st time this season and it started up fine. last weekend, only different thing I did was to fill it up with gas, and it only needed a little at that. But I could not get it to start- starter engages but it sounds like it isn't getting any gas. Finally after several tries got it to start but didn't run it very long. Carb looks clean. Battery is fully charged.
Any help is appreciated.

Joe

Accelerator is pumping fuel into the carb.
I double checked the battery condition and charged it to full since it was a little low, but the same thing happened- starter motor engages and it turned over the engine once after several tries but doesn't run. I pulled the plugs and other than being a little dirty with oil they look ok- these are plugs from last year so I cleaned them up and replaced them. I put some fuel line additive in the tank to absorb any water too. It ran fine two weeks ago today, only difference is I topped up the tank with new gas last weekend and now cannot start it.

IF ITS NOT FUEL>>>CHECK POWER ISSUES>>>MAYBE

See if your getting spark out of your coil and its not weak.

Work from there...

I put a screwdriver into the coil. hold the main coil wire with an insulated plier and turn if over and see if it sparks, or unattach one spark plug from the plug and ground it to the motor to see if it sparks.

It is getting spark, and I changed to new spark plugs too. I did get it to run after changing out the plugs but it is running very rough. Still sounds like a gas problem to me. Only problem is if I drain the gas what do I do with 28 gals. of questionable gasoline?

Filter It.................

You Don't have 28 gallons of Bad Gas,........

You've got a Quart or 2 of Crapola in the bottom of the tank,.......
And Possibly a plugged or bad fuel line, or pickup tube, or check-valve, or................

Is the fuel pump pumping ??
Change the Filters ??
Carb looks clean.
The Outside of a Carb., or Any other part of it that can Easily be Seen,.......

Doesn't Really Matter..........

A Carb. Isn't Clean, Til it's taken Apart,+ Cleaned........

Put the gas line from the tank in a fresh can of gas. If that is not it you didnt mention checking the dwell or timing. When is the last time you changed the points, cond and rotor?

Re: hard starting VP125A

engine had a full tuneup at the end of last season by the previous owner, I just changed the plugs today. I didn't have time to check the dwell or timing today though. The engine was running fine just two weeks ago the only different thing was adding some new gas after that trip.

When I advance the throttle gas is pumping into the carb, from what I can see and I collected some in a container- smells different though than fresh gas- can't quite describe it.

I don't see any fuel filter on this engine, unless it is in the line connecting to the carb itself?

Re: hard starting VP125A

Last year doesn't mean squat...... If you can't do a full tuneup each spring including points, condenser, spark plugs, cap and rotor, then you are probably going to have problems.
You are now dealing with the marine enviornment with moisture and long periods of non use. Unlike a car, a boat needs a yearly tuneup. Especially when they have points type ignitions.

Ok, lets try this> I was running rough then my 350 stopped running. My electronic ignition module when south.

Other thought..

Try putting a PSI gauge on your fuel line to see if your getting your PSI rating. Somewhere around 4 or 5?
