Somebody suggested I start a new thread with more detail:
1993 Evinrude Ocean Pro 200HP
I've been chasing a intermittent starting for a month or so and need some help. Recently motor has been difficult or impossible to start. l pulled plugs and cleaned and checked and no spark. Thinking ignition I replaced key switch as it was jumpy on OHM meter. No change. Pulled plugs again - no spark. Put a shot of carb cleaner in each cylinder put plugs back in and started right up and ran like top for three hours on water with over 1 hour at idle speed. No load up, no problems. A week later won't start. Pulled plugs and cleaned - no luck. When I can get it to start it really smoked heavily so I disconnected the VRO and went pre-mix. VRO lines plugged securely - no air leaks. Removed power pack and found one pinched, but not broken or shorted wire. I also replaced solenoid primer gasket. One question on this - on my old gasket, the white nylon valve pin extended vertically through the center of the gasket. The new gasket had the middle hole plugged and dealer said pin was not suppose to go through it. As soon as I installed it, the pin punched up through the hole just like the old one. I really think this is correct as the seal appears to be the tapered thicker part of the pin against the underside of the gasket.
I hate intermittent problems - rather just have it completely break. My batteries load check good, but I have read that these motors require 300 to 350 rpm to generate spark.
Followup info:
I had a new sealed mat battery 1100 CCA from my motorhome that I sold and I put it in. It made a big difference in the speed of cranking! Took it to the Gulf last week and it started and ran great. It's been a week and I'm heading over there sometime this weekend, but I think that may have been the issue all along. Some of the other issues may have contributed, but I think the primer gasket and hot battery made the difference.
We'll see.
Any ideas are appreciated.
