Engine: Evinrude 120
1993 or 1994
4 Cylinder

I have been having trouble with this engine starting recently. It has slowly gotten worse. It is not the starting system, compression is fine, I just cleaned all 4 carbuerators....

When I start it it jumps to but spews a ton of smoke, it runs rough, skipping a cylinder occasionally and then just loses power and dies out. I did this routine for about a half hour this morning until it finally caught. I could hear the engine finally switch modes (temperature thing?) and then it ran great.....Clean (for that engine) and smooth and I didn't have any trouble the rest of the day.

I had similar trouble before I cleaned the carbs about a month ago..then it ran great. Can they be dirty already? I put a new fuel filter on when I cleaned the carbs.

So the real question for me is...Why does it run so bad at first, then fine? What is different when it is cold?

thanks,
rusty

How long since the plugs were changed?
And by cleaned the carbs, what does that entail exactly? Rebuilt?

Plugs are all brand new. And I rebuilt all the carbs...cleaned but I didn't have the kit, so I used to old stuff. It ran really well for one or two trips after the "rebuild". I have new kits on order. So will do it again.

"why don't we have time to do it right the first time, but always have time to fix it?"

is it only when the eng is cold you have problems?

are you pushing in on the key?....... you wouldnt believe how often that is overlooked.

Yes only rough when cold, as soon as it clicks over to the warm mode (rpms drop) and it runs great. I do push in the key when starting cold.

I ran again the next day and it started easily.... still a bit of a dirty start. Although it has always been a bit dirty. I have 4 carb kits on order from iboats. When I get a chance I will redo the carbs again and see.

I have to push the primer on my boat like 8 times before it will run right, I just live with it. Have you tried pushing the primer in until it stabilizes?

not trying to jump in on your post but i am having the same problems. 1994 120 pretty much the exact same symptoms but mine doesn't want to idle for more then 5 mins. i created a post and for the most part sounds like carbs need complete rebuilding. I do have some additional questions/ concerns. i was told it could be the power pack starting to go and not sending power to a particular coil so no fire or not a good spark. just wondering what if this could be the case?

With engine " spewing tons of smoke" and hard starting I would look for a flooding problem. You may have a carb/s flooding and making it hard to start or a VRO pump with bad internal diaphram flooding crankcase after last use. Pull the pulse line to VRO and see it if has fuel in it ,if so VRO is bad.

Spewing tonnes of smoke is open to interpretation, a post a month ago from the same claim of a guy running in a barrel was normal 2 stroke behavior, we were expecting to see James Bond smoke screen but saw healthy 2 stroke 50:1 smoke. Start with kits and get back to us.
