hard shifting after new lower unit?

well, it's april 5'th and we are getting another winter storm here in connecticut.ice and snow! Damn, i wanted to work on my boat today! well, on my 91 evinrude 250 i had the lower end replaced with a used one(original was shot). after the change over, the shifting got noticably harder! i have Gaffrig controls in my boat.is there a way i can loosen it up a bit? i almost have to use 2 hands to put it in and out of gear! thanks for any insight! this is a great site!...james

Well the first thing to check is if its the cable or a problem in the g/c.Disconnect the shift cable at the engine and try the control, if its stiff more then likely it's time for a new cable or maybe the control needs to be repaired.If the cable feels good check the shift at the engine.Shift it by hand while turning the prop with your foot , it should be farely easy, if its not get it checked out.
