My original 1985 20' Grady Walkaround O/B with original single binnacle mount (not OMC, but can't tell manufacturer) has been hard to shift/accelerate for several years now----I guess as I get older, it aggarvates me more.

When I disconnect both cables at the engine (it has done this over several engines), the engine shift and throttle "arms" move smothly by hand. Also, when disconnected, the cables move smoothly using the binnacle control. It only is hard to move---forward and reverse-- when everything is connected---to shift/accelerate, I usuall "tap" the handle with the palm of my hand. Beyond just aggravation, I am concerned that it could be a dangerous
condition.

I've also tried to lubricate the cables, but that didn't help. Can anyone tell me what to look for to fix this problem.

if the cable are original, they are due to be replaced. also sharp bends in the cable make them extremely hard to move. there is probably a bends in the cable when they are connected.

Re: Hard O/B Throttle/Shift Condition

Every bend in the cable makes it that much harder to move when connected. The least amount of resistance at the engine end is magnified as it pushes the inner cable core wire against the outer housing at each turn. Center console boats have a special problem with that because of the extra bends required. Keep the bends to a minimum and as gradual as possible.

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the engine (did you try moving the linkages on the motor?) Usually if it is only hard going in and out of gear, the throttle cable is adjusted too tight causing some binding in the control.
