Hello all, I installed a new (rebuilt) 260a Volvo in my boat. It started fine but I was having trouble with the timing. Come to find out the distributor was messed up so I purchased a new electronic one and installed it.
Then the key switch went bad, replaced it.
The engine seemed to turn slow so I charged the batteries and installed a new starter.
I'm still getting a very "hard" turning motor.
Could this be the cables? I pulled the battery switch off and the ends behind it are clean as a whistle. Ground seems good.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Is the Timing Right,. Now,.?? Too Much will cause a Hard to Turn condition.....

Disconnect the Wiring that you have there now,+ Wire the Battery Directly to the Starter with Known Good Cabling,+ See if it turns better....

I've found Perfect Looking Cables,... That were Rotted Clean Thru inside the casing where water had Wicked in....... They passed Voltage,.. But Not Amperes,.... The Meter said power,.. but the starter Wouldn't Turn.......

Also,... How about a Load Test for those Batteries,.??

I dont know if the timing is right now, it wont start.lol I pulled plug one and the Button is in the right posistion on a compression stroke so it should be close, no?
The funny thing is it cranked well before the Hurricane we had last week. I checked the boat all through the storm and it never took on water, so I know the engine didnt flood.
Batteries are maybe two months old.
could I use jumper cables to go to the starter from the batteries to test the system or should I purchase a new cable?
Thnx for the responce.

You don't say how old the boat is, but you should be able to replace the red and black, for $30.00 or so....Use marine grade, not the ones you buy at the auto store...JK

A simple voltage drop test will tell you if the cables are ok. get a digital volt meter and put one end on the battery end of the cable and one end on the starter or block end and hit the key you should be reading less than 250mv if the cables are bad the voltage will flow through the meter instead of the cable.
