Well this an e-mail that I sent to a Friend of mine about a two day boating course In my hometown of Jacksonville,FL. So here are a few things that my friend knows that some people may not.
This was done a controlled course by a cerified powerboater who has over 30 years expeirence with power boats and he also piloted aircraft carriers. Whats is also no mentioned is the boat that is used it is a 1986 Formula 25 PC cruiser repowered a new 325 hp power plant. Well I just wanted to share this with you guys because this was a great learning expeirence and alot of fun
Well the course is two days long so today was pretty intense. During the first hrwe went over a few facts like displacement hulls and planning hulls, props and there pitch and how they pull in a certain direction depending on the rotation. Then we went over a few things that we would be doing in the powerboats during the slow speed course.
The first thing we had to do was to navigate and dock the boat useing only short bursts of throttle which was tricky to do in the Formula. Then we had to go through a zig zag course in reverse useing only short bursts of throttle which was also tricky. I had the biggest boat there and was one of the fastest.
After we did this we went and got lunch. When we got back we went into the club and went over some of the stuff we would do on the high speed course. As we went out they lined us all up and we played follow the leader a 25 mph we were only 2-3 boat lengths apart. The problem with that was that the instructer who was driving the lead boat made it extra complecated by making sharp turns and then you would fall off the persons wake from the boat in front of you. This was probably the scariest and most dangerous part of the entire high speed course but the Formula did alright.
Then they made a zig-zag course placing the markers 2 boat lengths apart we had to go through them at 25-30 mph GEEZZ! That wasn't easy but I made through pretty well. Then the next thing was easy all we had to do was hold a course at WOT.
Now the next thing was probably the most scary because was suren how the boat would respond in this maneuver. The wanted us to do a high speed stop well They had one marker where you were supposed to cut throttle and bring the helm hard over in a mater of about 2-3 seconds. Well I hit the gas and got up to about 30 I was real nervous as passed the marker I jammed the throttle into neutral and flung the helm over I felt the stern lift fo a second and then the v hull cought and put a massive wave I stopped with in 15 ft of the marker AMAZING!
This Is stuff i would have never attemped if I were out just mucking around on the river. But I feel good that I know that the boat and I can handel manuever like that in an emergency.
Well tell me what you think
