Does anyone here have any experience using the Magellan eXplorist 210 handheld GPS unit? I purchased one today and won't get a chance to use it until Sunday.

I mainly want to use it for speed/distance measurements, but any extras such as route tracking/backtracking would be nice. I've never owned a GPS unit and with so many out there, it's hard to make a decision on which one to buy. I chose this handheld due to the fact that it fit in my price range.

I'm just looking for comments on the workings of this GPS unit. Any help will be greatly appreciated! :)

Re: Handheld GPS/Magellan explorist 210

I have a 200 which I bought last year to fish the Gulf of Mexico tidal waters.

Haven't used it much so I'm not intimately familiar with it, but it's enough for me with what I want to do.

You can obviously measure speed (even my wakling speed of 2.4 mph), verify that your boat's speedometer is lying to you (grin) and compass direction (so you can setup your boat's compass in the water where there is no trailer to interfere).

It also has several ranges (including zoom) which are distance marked so you can determine range. Has a joy stick for moving about and has stored favorite locations. Mine has locked on to as many as 11 satellites (it tells you) at one time.

It will also show your past route. Like one day I was running around this 1,000 acre lake and it showed all my paths....hadn't realized that I made that many runs around the place....course I was playing that day, not fishing.

What's neat about this is if you are in uncharted waters and get lost, you can just reverse your boat and by watching where your present position arrow is, with respect to your previous route (how you got lost in the first place), you can back track and get out with no land marks to guide you..... perfect for fishing marshes where it is flat and every bay/cove/inlet/waterway looks like all the rest.

I have the Explorist 300, and like how it works. I use it to calculate my speed on the water. And use it alot for off roading as well.
