Take a physically undamaged dull blade and place it
on a solid wood support. Take a small punch or
head of a nail. Place it on the first tooth and
strike it sharply on the side of the tooth.
Repeat the same action on every other tooth on
the saw or blade. And your saw or blade will cut
as well as it did the day it was new.

Re: Hand saw sharpening is thing of the past.

I have my dads tools that he used to support our family. Among them are the saw set, jointer and 24" handsaw vise he used to sharpen his saws and also for others in his crew.

I haven't dug them out to practice yet but it is on my list for somday when life slows down a bit - if ever that happens.......

Here is a link I have for saw sharpening....

http://www.vintagesaws.com/library/primer/sharp.html

Have fun and keep the tradition alive!!

JD

Re: Hand saw sharpening is thing of the past.

I thought about some of you folks today. I hung my porch screen door today. its been off about a year.
seems its swelled pretty bad and I went in the shed and grabbed a small rabbit plane my grandfather had. shapened the blade on the whetstone and proceded to plane it rather than sand it. the smell of pine and the ribbon shavings did bring back fond memories.

anyone here ever watch a master carpenter walk a 20ft plank with a draw knife?
I used to spend hours watching my uncle do it building boats. as I got older I thought it was a waste of time. sure wish I knew then what I know now.

you dont have to build anything to feel a tool doing its work in your hands ,,you can still smell the smells ,feel the stone ,hold the knife ,,go back to a better time in your mind ,,better living through better chemicals,,is it time for my meds yet ???

Re: Hand saw sharpening is thing of the past.

I know what ya mean.
I sometimes bring in lighter knots just to smell them a while.
I do find myself looking harder and harder at some of the tools for woodworking my grandfather left. while he and his step dad,my uncle will, dont ask, were master carpenters and both did boatbuilding as well as house building their pride was cabinets. I watched both of them as a kid build complete sets for various relatives and never plug a power tool in.
everything was done by hand. both said power tools were to rough for cabinet making.
but I did get a quater for sweeping up the shavings, would grab it and haul for shannons store to buy an icecream and some pop. sometimes, if I asked to many questions, I would even get my quater in advance. took me 20 years to figgure out why :)
but there are a couple tool chests in the shed that have not been opened since sometime in the 80's that I know of.
I got two big oak pickle barrels that were packed when my grandparents moved back to NC from long island in 1948 that have not had the lids removed since they packed them.
oneday I will open them up to see whats in them.

do it before your will and strengths get weak,,it takse time to master good tools ,,you dont have to make a living at it but you do ,,,the tools deserve that you live up to their workmanship,,a tool not used is a waste ,,man i sure hope i can follow through with the advice im dishing out here,, lol

Re: Hand saw sharpening is thing of the past.

hahaah
well I built a box ,about 6'x2'x2', once to carry my model airplane from great lakes to TX then to NC.
a buddy, fellow machinist, looked at it and said, ya make pretty things out of steel but butchering wood was not your calling.
my wordworking skills are limited to fire starting.
however they have improved since I movedinto my grandfathers old house 10 years ago.
still cant tell which way the wood grain goes, used to fire grandpa up sometimes :) .
but I agree, some of these tools are very good and grandpa babied them. he would have a cow knowing I forgot to retract the plane blade or oil it after use today.
