Re: Hand held tach

what kind of handheld tach? there are electronic (ive got one for cars, switches from 2-8 cyls), works great, think I paid $30 10 yrs ago. Ive also got a photometer tach that you point at spinning object, it works great too. It will even read the Hz of ac current when you point it at a light bulb, it sees the flickers. Used on model airplanes point it at the prop and it can read to 35,000 rpm.

Hi getdanet:

Check these guys out.....just be sure they'll check what you need for 2 or 4 stroke...
The first one is cheap, but you may have to divide reading by 2 if used on 2 stroke.(not sure, haven't used one)

Click me
or
Me
or
Me

Re: Hand held tach

Why would you want a hand-held? When you can panel mount one ,and be in canstant monitor of the RPM.

Re: Hand held tach

I did not know their costs and i was trying to see if the were CHEAPER than a dash mount. its a 3 cylinder older force and i don't feel like dumping any money into a tach that when the motor goes i can't use on another motor .I saw a smaLL digital one in a magazine and was hoping is was CHEAPER. so i guess the answer to your ???? is i'm CHEAP

These tachs look attractive but don't say whether they would work with a magneto ignition, such as in my 1960 Lark. The lawnmower in the picture is probably magneto ignition, but the specs don't talk about it.

So, I would need an inductive clamp, two-stroke, magneto-compatible tach. Would any of these tachs work?

Re: Hand held tach

Are you talking about a permanent install, or a hand held, for diagnostics?

:)

Re: Hand held tach

Well if it was me, I'd rather spend the money on this one as it'll do much more for the money. You may have to cut readings in half when using on a two stroke, but thats a small price to pay for its versatility...

:)

Re: Hand held tach

If you want a testimonial I'm a tiny tach fan -- I could not get a conventional tach to last on my manual two stroke with an add on rectifier I installed. The Tiny tach works a charm and seems to be more accurate at all rpm's (the two identical teleflexes I installed prior to the t.t. varied by as much as 400 rpm at high revs and never read low rpm's properly).

Lark40 -- I can't imagine why the tiny tach wouldn't work on a magneto since it says it works on all two strokes and takes its reading off the spark plug wire, but just call the Tiny tach guys at the number on the website schemtic posted and ask, they're very knowledgable and helpful. Also, if you buy a tiny tach buy direct and get a custom length cable -- the standard model has too short a cable to reach to mount on a boat dash.
