Half Throttle Required To Start

I've been fixing various problems on my 1965 75hp Starflite IV but now the engine won't start unless I give it half throttle. Even after it starts when I back the throttle down the engine will idle rough and then die. At half throttle or more the engine seems to run just fine.

Before I "fixed" the last couple problems I found it would idle fine. The only changes I made were fixing a broken wire, setting the timing, and replacing a bad point.

Any ideas on what could be causing the problem? I'm not sure what to look at next.

It's the timing or point settings. Backtrack these and see what you come up with. If it ran good before you fixed it, it has to be there. .020 on the points

Re: Half Throttle Required To Start

Thanks, it's running butter but still dies at low idle. I went back and tweaked the points a little as well as adjusted the timing belt by one notch.

It will start at the regular starting poing but at low idle still runs rough and dies. By running rough I mean every so often the whole engine will jerk and almost die but then recovers. It does this once between every 15 to 30 seconds.

I only replaced one of the points. The remaining point is worn but still checks out ok. Could the point be the cause of the current problem or should I look somewhere else?
