Had to drop the lower to get the out drive off due to cable being stuck in reverse.

1984 Ranger with a 470 Motor SN 5039298
Cable was bad and had me stuck in reverse BUT lost a little oil, two tablespoons, from the upper gear case tube.

Question: Do I need to refill the gear oil back in the upper gear case or
will the lower unit pump it back in?

My plans are to change the lower unit gear oil and water pump.

This is an Alpha? You need to pump new oil into the lower unit plug. Remove the top vent plug after screwing your pump in place, and pump it till it comes out the top vent.

theres a lot more than 2 tablespoons in there.follow fishermarks advice

As soon as you loosen up that upper vent plug the oil will come pouring out, so be ready with a pan.
